Draconian may not be the proper adjective, but I do believe that 70% is too high. It will only encourage tax evasion through questionable deductions, shifting assets overseas, etc. The bigger issue is that those who can afford creative accounting practices are more likely to engage in schemes to reduce their marginal tax rate. If we worked at curbing that then we could lower the rates for the honest taxpayers. |
