No. But they weren't thought of as white either, especially by working class "Archie Bunker" type whites of yore.Allow a quick story: My Father worked for the NYCRR on the west side during the 40s. He was a platform boss in charge of a "shape up" crew of stevidors to load/unload freights. He got his crew ready to work when his boss, an old time crusty ball & a beer Irishman named Tommy Corcoran. He caught up with my dad & said "Jaysus Willie, what kind of a crew do you got today, not a friggin white guy out there" They were all Italians. |
