Posted by Dyre Dan on Tue Nov 13 18:59:06 2018, in response to French president Emmanuel Macron wanted to “offer homage” to Nazi collaborator Philippe Pétain, posted by Olog-hai on Tue Nov 13 10:17:13 2018. New York had a ticker-tape parade for Petain in 1931, just two years before Hitler gained power. There is a list of ticker-tape parade honorees embedded in the sidewalk of lower Broadway today, consisting of separate pieces for each parade. Petain is there on the list. DeBlasio suggested that maybe the piece commemorating Petain's parade should be removed, but in the end it was decided to keep it, since it is supposed to be a historically accurate list of all such parades.Likewise, if a ceremony is held in France honoring the French heroes of World War I, then Petain's name should be among them. But there should be no ceremony and no new object honoring just him. |
