Trump has a base that will vote for him no matter what

Don't be silly. If Trump lurched towards the left and away from defending the Constitution, that "base" will definitely abandon him. Any shade of his going leftward does not bring apologists popping out from his "base".

If the Democrats keep lurching to the left they will lose again in 2018 and 2020

Now that is absolutely true. And this shameless display of theirs of late already backfired, and the rent-a-mobs going after GOP Senators are definitely undermining and sullying them in the eyes of the public.
