The first known use of the term was on October 17, 1821 in a publication called "The Jewish Expositor and Friend of Israel" that was published by what was then known as the London Society for Promoting Christianity Amongst the Jews and is now known as the Church's Ministry Among Jewish People (CMJ). It was used in 1829 to refer to a style of church that would keep with some Jewish traditions in order to convert Jews. It is this etymology that results in the term being considered offensive by many. |
