It appears to be somewhat similar in the Catholic church as when a woman enters the convent or a man enters the brotherhood. When my sister entered the convent many years ago, she was given a choice of names based on the names of family members. in exchange for her christened name. She chose the name of Sr James Warren, based on my brother Warren's and my name. AFAIK, nowadays that practice has been discontinued. If you have a religious calling, You keep your christened name.
