What Levine is accused of isn't inanity; it's serious criminality. The Met has known about the main accusation for a while and has swept it under the rug - if they had given it the attention it deserved they might not have felt pressured now to go to the other extreme.

As for Franken, no one is firing him. Calling for him to resign is legitimate. He doesn't have to agree. He can let the Ethics Committee, which will follow a form of due process, decide on an appropriate remedy.

As for Lopate, Schwartz, and Garrison Keillor, I wonder if their employers have overreacted. Unlike the others, there are no credible details of bad behavior coming out about any of them.
