Turkey under the Republican People's Party was not the same as Turkey under the so-called Justice and Development Party, and the purpose of getting them into NATO was to protect them, Israel and Europe from the USSR as well as keep the USSR out of the Mediterranean (plus stop the USSR from easily helping the national-socialist Egyptians under Nasser). |
