I don't have anything much of an opinion of Eisenhower. I was a little kid then. I grew up however, facing the mindsets of the time, that, as a girl, my future would be limited to certain "feminine" focused careers, and that being married at any cost was far more important than having than having a genuine capability to be independent, have a career, one's own money, and choice as to partner, marriage and lifestyle.Plus, God forbid a young women found herself with an unplanned unwanted pregnancy. Knew a few girls that committed suicide as a result rather than go through with it. Others mysteriously disappeared from the neighborhood, as I was told it was none of my business. Plus, as we went into the early sixties, marriage meant a string of imposed pregnancies followed by years of sedation once one realizes that was as good as it got. Thank God we got it together to put a stop to it, and I'll be damned if that clock gets turned back one second. |
