I'm not really sure when the changeover was made to "Muslims" in the non-Islamic world

In the English-speaking world. Moslem and Muslim are English-language words, with Wikipedia saying Moslem is an older spelling. The French or Spanish word is Musulman, though the German is Muslim or Moslem.

Evidently in Arabic the word, if pronounced Moslem, is pejorative.
