Given the long, long history of police killing Black people without cause and getting away with it, even when there is sharp, clear video, I'd say BLM is more than justified in its grievances.I myself have lost much confidence in the ability of the police to deal with people of color, without shooting them. Philando Castile did everything the NRA teaches gun owners to do when stopped by the police. He still got shot to death, and the cops walked free. In fact, and off-duty (black) cop recently went to assist at the scene of a stolen car crash near his home. He has his service weapon drawn. Two on duty cops ordered him to lie down. He complied, and identified himself as a fellow officer. Recognizing him, the two uniforms told him to get back up and join them. Then a third (white) cop rolled up on the scene, and shot the Black cop without warning or preamble. The kicker? BEFORE being told whom he'd just shot, the white cop trotted out the well-worn, jury-tested, "I feared for my life" trope, exactly as he'd been trained to do. Imagine if his victim hasn't been a cop. BILl's criticism of the police in America is accurate. |
