More chances to escape. I'd rather try to escape and most likely die if unsuccessful than be subject to an expected lifetime of unrelenting hard labor. My skills are also definitely more oriented toward dealing with Berlin over South Carolina.

And I did stack the deck slightly by saying 1938 and not, say, 1942. I actually knew a Jewish woman who didn't leave Germany until 1939.
