There aren't "a lot more of them." There are fewer people who live in rural areas. IINM about 80% of the population is "urbanized." I am fairly sure that if such a number is correct it includes suburbs. Thus a significant minority is rural. Why should they matter more than the majority of the country? You claim that it would be wrong for New York and Los Angeles to decide the election, when they never will because they are a significant minority of the national population. But why do you think that it's OK that another significant minority should be able to decide the election?
