It was a case of what Mad.Ave types call bad demographics. Sure they had a substantial listener base, but who?? Most of the listeners were older & outside of the advertisers "sweet spot" aka 18-34 age group. Historically, outside of that group don't spend as much as as the youngins.
Those folks, that still listen to terrestrial radio, just love their Z-100 just as an example.
CBS-FM is going after the younger demos.Listen to 'CBS-FM nowadays, the word "oldies" has been banished and has been for several years now.
It is not ratings thats the big stat nowadays, its the billing. And radio stations that cater to the "kids" make more $$$. Thats the nature of the business nowadays. Bottom line, Z-100 bills lots more than CBS-FM.
