No my head's not exploding. But rolling out Peter Thiel, doesn't change the reality that Trump has repeatedly stated his anti-LGBT positions.

Here is my op-ed on Trump's duplicity:

Despite Thiel Appearance, Trump Likely To Roll Back LGBT Rights

By Nathan James

During last night’s celebratory session in which Manhattan real-estate mogul Donald Trump accepted the nomination of the Republican Party as their candidate for President, another billionaire–software developer Peter Thiel–made a major stump speech on Trump’s behalf.

Thiel drew thunderous applause when he proclaimed himself “proud to be a gay man, proud to be a Republican, and proud to be an American”. That historic moment was seconded by Trump himself, who vowed during his long address to “make LGBTQ safe in America”.

Although the candidate’s bombastic speech was billed by the campaign as “nothing but truth-telling”, Trump’s record on LGBT rights contradicts his rhetoric, as do some of his other Republican Convention (RNCC) speakers.

In interviews and statements on the campaign trail, Trump has revealed his actual views on major LGBT issues of the day, and these suggest a likely anti-gay administration, should the reality TV star be elected.

In an interview last January with David Brody at CBN, Trump said, “I think they can trust me. They can trust me on traditional marriage. I was very much in favor of having the court rule that it goes to states and let the states decide.

And that was a shocking decision for you and for me and for a lot of other people. But I was very much in favor of letting the states decide” Trump has repeatedly declared himself a “traditionalist” on marriage, telling ABC’s George Stephanopulous “I would appoint Supreme Court judges who would overturn [same-sex] marriage.

Trump’s main pick to replace the late Antonin Scalia is John Pryor, a staunch conservative who favors recriminalizing homosexuality “to protect established social norms”. Trump also supports extending discrimination against LGBT people, currently law in four states, including his running mate, Mike Pence‘s home state of Indiana.

Pence championed, and signed a “Turn Away The Gays” law there last year, joining Mississippi, North Carolina, and Tennessee in passing “new Jim Crow” legislation.

“If Congress considers the First Amendment Defense Act (FADA) a priority,” Trump wrote to the anti-gay American Principles Project last December, “then I will do all I can to make sure it comes to my desk for signatures and enactment.”

This bill, similar to laws pending or passed in 18 states, would allow people or businesses to refuse goods, services, or healthcare to LGBT people, based on “sincerely held personal beliefs”, nationwide.

The Human Rights Campaign, which tracks the GOP candidate’s policies on LGBT rights, said of FADA, “[This legislation] would also enable federal employees to refuse to fully perform their duties if they believe they conflict with their objection to same-sex marriage.

For example, an employee at the Department of Veterans Affairs could refuse to process a claim for survivor benefits for the same-sex spouse of a service member.”

Trump, traveling earlier this month in North Carolina, heartily endorsed that state’s harsh anti-LGBT law, HB2, which forces transgender people to use only those restrooms that “conform with the gender on their birth certificate”, rather than their established gender identity, and permits discrimination against gays and lesbians across the board.

“I’m going with the state. The state, they know what’s going on, they see what’s happening and generally speaking I’m with the state on things like this,” Trump announced. “I’ve spoken with your governor, I’ve spoken with a lot of people and I’m going with the state.” For his part, Gov. Pat McCrory declared he was an “ardent Trump supporter” after their Raleigh meeting.
