I beg to differ with you. About 18 months ago, I worked with BLM and other groups to do a march protesting against the deaths of people of color at the hands of the police. We put it together with the help of the NYPD Community Affairs Unit, and I believe it involved close to 10,000 people. We marched all the way from NYU to Midtown, then back along Broadway to One Police Plaza and the Brooklyn Bridge. The police made perhaps ten arrests during this five-hour event, and none of those locked up were, by their own admission, part of our group.

My experience has been that nonviolent direct action is highly effective, and that trouble at these demonstrations often comes not from protesters, but from outside agitators. Micah Johnson, for example, wasn't part of BLM or any other group. He acted solely on his own initiative.
