In Scotland and Northern Ireland, by contrast, there was a strong pro-European feeling that has only increased tensions within the United Kingdom itself.That's a misreading of Northern Ireland. What happened was that the Nationalist community used Remain as a sectarian proxy issue to stick two fingers up to the British, whilst the Unionist community had a more typical split, with the DUP's (the largest of the Unionist parties) strongest areas being strongly Leave and the DUP's weakest areas having a bare majority for Remain. |
