I have heard these assertions in reply to Malthus as long as I can remember, especially in socialist theory.

Since WWII food and medical technology have enabled the world to sustain a growing population. But a controlled population as a response?

When I was born the world population was under 2.5 billion.

When Kennedy was elected it was ~3 billion.

When Clinton was elected it was ~5.5 billion.

Now it is ~7.4 billion.

In my one lifetime world population has more than tripled. That "incredible rapidity" of demographic change you're talking about is lagging a bit.
