A picnic is a specific meal, defined as cold foods served outdoors, usually away from home. When invited to one, do you bring a pound of raw hamburgers? No. You bring bread or fruit or wine to go along with the rest of the fare

A cookout is any meal cooked outdoors on a fire, be it wood, charcoal or gas flame.
