I was asked to bring the ham
That seems like a pretty asshole-ish, not to mention stupid, thing to do. Assuming you're saying that up to and including the time of the meal under discussion, you've never eaten ham before, why would the other five people, who are ham-eaters, leave it up to you to bring the ham? WTF? As sickening as it may be, it seems one or more of those five may actually be worse than you.
