Sanders undergoes elective hernia surgery

Bernie Sanders is having elective hernia surgery at George Washington University on Monday and will be out of work until Tuesday, according to his Senate office.

Sanders' office released a one-paragraph statement on Monday afternoon stating that Sanders, who turned 74 in September, would undergo the outpatient surgery.

Sanders spokesman Michael Briggs said he did not believe the demands of the campaign trail had caused the hernia. He did not have more specific details about how long the procedure would take or how long it typically takes patients to recover.

Briggs said he was confident Sanders would be back to full speed soon.

"He'll be back on the road later this week," Briggs said Monday.
