The best chance is to get a bunch of moderate Republicans to elect one of their own as Speaker in exchange for Democratic votes.

I keep wondering about that. They keep saying 40 right wingers could sink McCarthy because he couldn't get 218 votes. But can't 30 Republicans from districts that Democrats occasionally win say enough already, and demand a more moderate leader, who would get elected with some Democratic votes to replace the 40 Republicans he can't get?

Of course, when that happened in NY in 1965 it didn't particularly result in good government.
