Secret sauce for you here. If anything goes the least bit whoopsie from the remaining entrails of the previous versions, hold down the left shift key (below caps lock) as soon as you hear the chime at startup. Keep holding it down until the Apple logo appears and then let go.This will put you into "safe boot" which will take about 5-6 times as long to load as normal. Once that bar finally gets to the other end, you should see "SAFE BOOT" in red letters on the upper right of the screen. Since it doesn't load the normal video driver in this mode, you might also see some amusing "artifacts" all over your screen. Worry not about that. Once it finally comes up, sign in and then shut down. Then restart normally. You will be impressed as all the former cruft gets removed and cleaned up, tightened up and it'll be like a shiny new Mac.
