Yes, there have been a total of 83 LOD deaths this year. But the Officer Down site lists 35 deaths by homicide, as follows:Gunfire (intentional): 24 Vehicular assault: 3 Assault: 3 Vehicle pursuits: 4 Fall: 1 (Vehicle pursuits can fall into the "homicide" category because the officer's death arose out of ongoing criminal activity). All other LOD deaths listed for 2015 are of an accidental or medical nature. (A case could be made that those dying of 9/11 illnesses were murdered, but, IINM, that legal question hasn't yet been settled.) So, in sum, SMAZ is correct: the number of actual cop killings, as opposed to other causes of LOD death, is plummeting. |
