Blame it on the Kardashians.

A fireworks show from a barge off Marina del Rey startled South Bay residents with about 15 minutes of loud booms just after midnight today, keeping thousands of people awake and drawing the ire of a Los Angeles city councilman.

The pyrotechnics were commissioned by reality television star Khloe Kardashian, who has dropped former Los Angeles Laker husband Lamar Odom and threw a 26th birthday party aboard a yacht off Marina del Rey for her new beau, Houston Rockets superstar James Harden, the celebrity gossip website TMZ reported.

The loud booms that began at midnight could be heard along the coast all the way to Rancho Palos Verdes.

“It was enough to wake us up and certainly to concern me that something else crazy was going on,” said Rancho Palos Verdes resident Juan Rodriguez. “I did have a thought for a moment of calling the police.”

Los Angeles City Councilman Mike Bonin, who represents the Westside, was furious today. Bonin woke up in Mar Vista to an exploding Twitter account. Phones rang off the hook at his offices from residents wanting to know who allowed a Tuesday night fireworks show.

The city, he said, had nothing to do with it, and the party’s organizers claimed they had permits and that the U.S. Coast Guard provided its blessing.

Bonin said his office is looking into whether the Los Angeles County Fire Department “blessed this.”

“I heard from folks from all over the place,” Bonin said. “Folks were rousted from a good night’s sleep, school kids were crying in the night, dogs were barking, animals were going nuts. This was an unexpected, unanticipated, scary-as-hell, middle-of-the-night series of explosions.”

Asked if the county had issued a permit for the pyrotechnics, fire Inspector David Dantic said: “We are investigating it right now.”

U.S. Coast Guard Petty Officer Andrea Anderson said the party organizers did not have a permit. The Coast Guard was notified Tuesday about a request for a permit and examined whether the show would pose a hazard to other boats and people, she said.

Firefighters examined the boat for safety, and because the yacht was anchored in open water a mile outside the marina, Coast Guard officials did not require a permit for the party.

“They did meet the safety criteria,” Anderson said.

Had the boat been inside the marina, the county Department of Beaches and Harbors would not have issued a permit, spokeswoman Carol Baker said. No one approached the agency for a permit, she said.

“We don’t allow fireworks on our beaches. We don’t allow them in the harbor,” Baker said.

US Magazine reported that more than 200 guests attended the bash aboard the Fantasea yacht docked in Marina del Rey. Guests were instructed to wear white and were greeted with a glass of champagne as they arrived.

Guests included Khloe’s sister, Kim Kardashian, and her husband, rapper Kanye West; the rest of the Kardashian clan, including sister Kourtney Kardashian, half-sisters Kendall and Kylie Jenner, Kylie’s rapper boyfriend, Tyga, Khloe’s mother, Kris Jenner and her boyfriend, Corey Gamble. NBA players Trevor Ariza and Baron Davis were there as well.

Hermosa Beach resident, Ron Felsing, who wasn’t invited and was asleep at the time, said he awakened to the loud noises at midnight. He suspected problems at the nearby power plant in Redondo Beach.

“Almost sounded like someone moving furniture about in my home or something being pounded on,” he said. “I opened the north-facing back door. Could hear it — almost like a constant fireworks in the distance.”

Once word spread that the Kardashians played a role in the noise, the reaction was predictable.

“I think my reaction was, ‘Oh God, it’s the Kardashians,’” Bonin said. “I really don’t care who did this. I don’t care if it was a celebrity or a non-celebrity ... or the royal family. “They should not be allowing midnight fire shows near residential neighborhoods. It’s crazy, it’s stupid, it’s rude.”

Rodriguez agreed, saying the fireworks displayed a Kardashian attitude of “to heck with the public.”

“I just think this is once again an example of how little respect and how little they value everyone else around them,” Rodriguez said.
