The WSJ article is blocked by a paywall, but the preview does raise one glaring red flag in McHugh's first sentences: He incorrectly uses the word "transgendered", as opposed to "transgender people", highlighting his perception of the trans community at the outset. In addition, I wouldn't expect a very conservative, Rupert Murdoch-owned newspaper to be neutral on such a hot-button subject.There is a body of scientific work on transgender people and gender identity, including a 2012 study revealing differences in brain structure for male-to-female transgender individuals, as compared with a control group, and further work done earlier this year at Boston University comprises 'the first comprehensive review of the scientific evidence that gender identity is a biological phenomenon', as one of the doctors involved in the research states. Far from being "social activism", scholarly work on the links between biology and gender identity/sexual orientation represents a growing repository of peer-reviewed, empirical research, supported by medical science. |
