OK, that one is tricky.Morally, there can be no objection to what consenting adults do in private, which means we can't ban incestuous marriage. However, children born through incest are likely to have deformities, which means incestuous reproduction infringes on the rights of a nonconsenting person. Just offhand, I can't think of a way to enforce such bans, but the problem is hardly limited to incestuous reproduction. If you have a gene that causes disease (such as Huntington's disease), then you should not be allowed to reproduce the allele responsible for the disease. (You can still reproduce, though; gametes are haploid, so just select one with a healthy allele.) I'd also say that people who simply can't afford to raise children properly should not be allowed to have them until they can. Again, even if I don't know how to accomplish these goals offhand doesn't mean they're not valid; at minimum, we can start by breaking down the cultural notions that reproduction is always good no matter what, that reproduction should be compulsory, and that children are "punishments" for women having "unauthorised" sex rather than people in their own right. |
