It's been illustrated (by Skeptical Inquirer IIRC) that established churches tend to liberalize (though the Catholic Church seems at war with itself at times) while the more socially conservative people tend to move to newer churches and movements.

On the whole, the churchgoing population of the U.S. remains socially stable over time; only the churches they follow change.
