By the way, in my country there's a rough equivalent to the condescending um— if you need to explain the obvious to someone who doesn't get it, you preface your explanation with the words: "Ees amek..."The problem is, those words literally mean "I say," so a literal translation of those condescending statements will make you sound like Foghorn Leghorn. Which admittedly is condescending, if not in the way you probably wanted. Note that the "ees amek" phrase is only used when speaking to people of the same rank as you— when speaking to lower-ranked people, you'd say: "San en kefela..." (literally, "for the beginners/trainees") and when speaking to higher-ranked people you'd mind your fucking manners and be deferential no matter how stupid they are— don't worry, stupid people tend not to be higher-ranked for long. |
