I believe you are correct and this will become a requirement of more aviation authorities. I did see that one European airline (Easyjet, perhaps, I don't recall) has instituted the requirement effective immediately.Even that is not a complete fail-safe. Some countries (including Canada) only require two pilots on board for long-haul flights. One pilot flies the plane while the other sleeps in the cockpit (as opposed to the three-man procedure where the sleeper takes a bed in the cabin and the two awake pilots remain in the cockpit). A sleeping co-pilot is probably just as effective at preventing an intentional crash as one who has been locked outside the cockpit -- perhaps even less effective since there will be nobody banging on the door to get back in. |
