I would like to know why, of the various Democrats who did and didn't go, that particularly group was prominent.

It would be understandable to feel a racial solidarity with the President, though that's not a great reason to shun an important speech on an important issue that other members of their party attended.

And going back in history, it could be evidence that the historic alliance between Jews and Blacks on Civil Rights is deader than seemed apparent.
