Why not just shot down "the A Train", or the Brighton line, or other lines that are known problems in storms like this.

I suspect that closing the subway down was the swift kick in the ass to questionable employers to let their employees go home early and stay out of the terrible weather conditions that were being predicted. Even for those who drive, the fact that the subway closed reinforced what was supposed to be the terrible nature of the storm. Some of us work for stupid employers that magically expect us to show up in terrible weather, so something like that was necessary to excuse ourselves from receiving a demerit for not showing up or showing up late...
