The whole point of hate crime laws is that they impose a stronger penalty if you attack someone because of their membership in a historically oppressed group. If a black person is killed for his wallet, he was killed for his wallet— it's not a hate crime unless the prosecutor can prove he was killed because he was black (and the wallet was incidental).Or do you seriously think that lynchings were not motivated by hatred of black people in particular, or that they didn't serve to terrify anyone with dark skin? |
