We did. They ignored us.

You were the responsible parents, they were the ignorant children. Children ignore parents, there are consequences. Here's the thing. Those 60 individuals were part of the protest in the sense they were marching alongside the rest of you. No matter their anger, deeply felt or not so much, what they chanted was despicable and deplorable. Beyond that, it was unconscionable to any reasonable human being and has no place in our society. You would never say anything like that, Nathan, nor would any of us. On the other hand, those who remain silent are part and parcel if not equally culpable. For those that defend that act as freedom of speech, to me borderline "hate speech", that does not mean the rest have to stand idly by and meekly accept it. Our perfection as human beings is our imperfection; that is, our ability to overcome obstacles and adversity by whatever means necessary. I was not there, you were. Can you state those means? Did a handful simply tell the 60 to stop and leave it at that? Did any of you approach the police and apologize for the action of "the few?" Did you consider writing an article stating the reasons for your protest while at the same time clearly and unequivocally denouncing the "Kill the Cops" protestors who saw to it to join your crusade? I was not there, you were. I cannot sit here and tell you exactly what I would have done in your situation but I'd like to think my efforts would have been forceful and purposeful. E Pluribus Unum. You have led marches, researched and reported on critical issues, spoke in front of masses, passionately advocated on behalf of your causes and those without a voice. You as much as anyone can make a difference.
