It doesn't take long at all to choke a person to death, even if they are in perfect health.Airway obstruction--choking--is one of only two Segment 1 call types (the highest priority) in the NYC EMS system. That's because you WILL lose consciousness after just 20 seconds without air. A minute after that, you're dead, unless someone is there who knows the Heimlich Maneuver, or I can get to you. Watch the Garner video again, and pay attention to the time index when the cops grab him. Then read the time index when Garner stops breathing. Not a lot of time goes by, which is my point. |
