Pope Francis: Evolution and Big Bang are real and God isn’t ‘a magician with a magic wand’
Harry Readhead for Metro.co.uk

Pope Francis has declared that evolution and the Big Bang are real and God is not ‘a magician with a magic wand’ – in contradiction to the creationist theory apparently endorsed by his predecessor.

Speaking at the Pontifical Academy of Sciences, the Pope put an end to the so-called ‘pseudo theories’ of intelligent design and creationism, theories that seemed to be supported by Pope Benedict XVI in a 2005 interview.

And Francis went on to argue that the existence of a creator is not inconsistent with evolution nor the Big Bang and that in fact it ‘requires’ both theories.
‘When we read about Creation in Genesis, we run the risk of imagining God was a magician, with a magic wand able to do everything. But that is not so,’ he said.
‘He created human beings and let them develop according to the internal laws that he gave to each one so they would reach their fulfilment.

‘Evolution in nature is not inconsistent with the notion of creation, because evolution requires the creation of beings that evolve.’

The comments, which built on the words of progressive popes like Pius XIII and John Paul II, would seem to indicate a desire to leave behind the ‘anti-scientific’ reputation of the Catholic Church that saw Galileo retract his theory that the Earth revolved the Sun.
Scholars, however, see Francis’ words as in keeping with a historically positive relationship between science and the church that dates back to the mathematicians of the Middle Ages.
