There you have it. They are no longer counted as unemployed. This has been the standard federal government use of the word "unemployed" for many decades.That's the U-3 unemployment rate (the one internationally agreed upon as a comparative measure of "unemployment." But those people (specifically, discouraged workers, people who want full time work but are working part time, and those who were unable to look form work due to school, family responsibilities, health, or transportation problems) are counted as "unemployed" in the U-6 Unemployment Rate, which is 11.8 percent. This is the number conservative news outlets like to call "the real unemployment rate." The U-4 Unemployment Rate, which includes discouraged workers but not students, the sick, and part timers, is currently 6.4 percent. |
