this timing of this stinks.

Eureka!

I'm sure the timing was no accident. It came just as many Arab leaders were publicly condemning Hamas for prolonging the conflict. I don't know if these comments made it into the local Arabic language press. However, it's still significant because it exposed divisions within the Palestinian community on how to approach Israel. This division could have been exploited to arrive at some sort of agreement between the parties.

The agreement might not have been complete but it could have made life more tolerable for Israelis and Palestinians. Such an agreement might have been reached because the Hamas' strategy was discredited by many Palestinians. The "moderate" (for want of a better term) Palestinians might have risked facing their mobs at this time, if their "moderate" approach showed signs of progress.

The timing of Israel's action served to discredit these "moderates." The conflict caused a political power vacuum within the Palestinian community. With which faction does Israel prefer to deal, Hamas or the PA?

Israel refuses to negotiate with Hamas but states it would negotiate with the PA. Israel cannot be a disinterested spectator in the coming power struggle to fill the current political vacuum. Its diplomatic actions should be motivated by making the PA the dominant force within the Palestinian community. The PA might actually be able to adhere to agreements, if they were dominant.

Israel's action prevented the PA from taking its first baby steps to achieving such domination within the Palestinian community.
