It's becoming more and more, there are no "Americans", everything is hyphen this or coma that.And it's always "something-American" And the reason for that is we spend too much time focusing on what makes us different, and not what we have in common. I'm a cranky person and I'm a guy. That's two things Salaam and I have in common. But he has to focus on what makes us different. I'm about a half dozen different things in my background, but all that matters to me is one word, AMERICAN. I'm not "Irish-American", I'm not "French-American", I'm not "German-American", I'm not "Slovenian-American", along with potentially "Italian-American" and "British-American". No, I'm an American with Irish, French, German, Slovene and possibly Italian and English roots. I do not respect someone because they are black or are a woman or are gay or are a different religion. No, I respect people because they are human beings. And that is all that should matter. |
