That's why I said "neither the cops nor prosecutor," Fred.Reminds me of a story from many years ago. About a dozen of us attended a bachelor party over in East. St. Louis (Illinois), across the river from St. Louis. Let's just say the morals over in ESL are looser than in St. Louis. There were some lovely ladies doing a dance for the groom-to-be when 6 cops burst into the restaurant. They started doing the usual cop stuff when they noticed six of us staring closely at them. One of the cops tried intimidating us but then one of the men handed him a business card. He was a city attorney in the town where the restaurant was located. One of the other men handed the cop his business card; he was an ADA in St. Louis City. All six of us were lawyers and we all handed him our cards. The cop was flustered and the other cops kept their distance while the groom and best man were handcuffed. The lead cop almost whined, "I'm just doing my job" when the city attorney said, "Yes, and we're making sure you do everything correctly." This was before everybody had cellphones, mind you. So when the cops know there's someone watching who can make waves if the I's aren't dotted and the T's aren't crossed, they tend to do things by the book. |
