That's a story I've heard quite often, especially from the relatives on my dad's (Jewish) side who used to live in Brooklyn.The old Erie main line used to run down the middle of Main Avenue in Passaic NJ, in a very similar fashion to how the South Chicago Branch runs down the middle of 71st Street. Pic below shows the old Erie Passaic station; linked to Subchat by streetcarman who has good taste in photos at least. The station is now a bus terminal, and the railroad ROW is paved over.  |
