South L.A. community demands answers in fatal police shooting of mentally ill man

Los Angeles Police officials faced tense crowd that demanded answers in the shooting death of mentally ill man at the hand of their officers.

Police Chief Charlie Beck fielded questions from a crowd of about 250 — including activists — at the Paradise Baptist Church in South Los Angeles, according to local media.

Beck declined to identify the cops who shot and killed 25-year-old Ezell Ford, whose parents say he was diagnosed with depression, bipolar disorder and schizophrenia, the L.A. Times reported.

He also refused to say why the cops stopped Ford in the first place.

"Of course that is important to us," he said to groaning listeners. "And that will be revealed in the investigation."

Much to the chagrin of the crowd, Beck reiterated that the investigation is only a week old and that police have not gathered all the facts. He was not willing to give the public only half of the story, according to the California paper.

By holding the meeting, Beck wanted to establish trust between the community and law enforcement so everyone understands what the timetable looks like.

"There are still more questions than answers," he told the crowd.

Before the meeting, demonstrators gathered in the neighborhood chanting slogans and holding signs that condemn "killer cops." That sentiment continued in the church.

"When is this cop going to be named, indicted and convicted?" one woman shouted at the police, in a video shot by local station KTLA.

There are conflicting reports about what led the Ford's death.

His family members say he complied with police demands before he was shot. But officers say he ignored the cops' orders and even grabbed an officer.
