Yep ... "keep your hands where I can see them" and "don't be reaching into anything" is a way to survive. So is NOT looking the cop in the face while you reach for the glove compartment (convinces them that you're keeping an eye on them ready to reach in for your gun) and dozens of other things.

Even if you're white, not doing that will definitely make them pull back on the hammer if you do anything contrary to that. Seriously.

Understand that *I* understand. If you don't want to be shot for DWB (Driving While Black) and don't have a handy copy of the 1940's "Green book" (google it) then some street smarts in dealing with cops will definitely make it far LESS likely that your spleen will get ventilated. I say all this out of love and respect.

1. Stop right where you are and SHOW your hands, open.
2. Don't REACH for anything unless ASKED to.
3. Do NOT look straight at the cop while you do something else.
4. Keep your damned mouth shut.
5. Don't volunteer any information (see 4)
6. Don't make any sudden moves or bolt.
7. COMPLY with any instructions.
8. Tell them flat out if you have a weapon and where it is and let them HAVE it.
9. TELL them that you do not intend to be a threat or do anything stupid.
10. Keep your damned month shut and ask if you are free to go or whether you should ask for an attorney.

Doing ALL of the above will help you go home.

This whole Ferguson thing sucks. Michael is dead. PLEASE let's not have any MORE Michaels. :(
