This place runs on a Microsoft database of vintage design. When you hit post, the database has to be loaded, shifted and then appended to. When so many new posts are saved to the database, the system will then back up the ENTIRE database to a backup file - it is HERE where subchat can go away for almost a minute before it'll accept new reads or writes.It's a single-threaded program and can be busy doing other things when any one person hits the button for it to do something. I find it charming given its size in that it's still working and hasn't lost its green card in all these years now. :) |
