Many neighborhoods, businesses, and unions almost totally excluded blacks. Just as black unemployment had increased in the South with the mechanization of cotton production, black unemployment in Northern cities soared as labor-saving technology eliminated many semiskilled and unskilled jobs that historically had provided many blacks with work. The racial unemployment gap was narrow from 1880 through about 1940. It widened from 1940-1960. In 1950 the white unemployment rate was around 4% while the black unemployment rate was around 7%. The data excludes men younger than 30 who were in school, and men in prison. In 1960 the rates were about about a 1/2% higher for both, with the spread still around 3%. |
