Lincoln used the Declaration to bolster his point that black folk were included in the "all men are created equal" statement and so should the Constitution be interpreted, versus the concept that black folk were non-human property as Chief Justice Taney and others interpreted. In no way did Lincoln give more weight to the Declaration than the Constitution, which as we know is the law of the land. He merely breathed new life into it as a valid point of reference.
