Partially ... and only minimally.

Since he wants to hear "the story" one more time, here we go ...

After finishing up my first southbound run to Brighton Beach with a train of arnines, I was asked to move a train from the layup tracks just south of the station to Coney Island yard. (we normally laid up at Stillwell yard)

The train was already charged up, was given no information by my dispatcher other than "take it down to Coney and we'll put it on track 23 when you get there".

I released, did my two brake tests, and off I went. Completely routine run past three stops, having to slow down and honk through each on the way to layup. No problems, everything just normal and peachy.

When I finally got into the ladder at Coney yard, had to go past a pair of call-ons, full stop at each and finally onto the layup track where there was a train ahead of me and another call-on waiting for me to position my train 20 feet from the one sitting there.

On the very LAST reduction, NOTHING ... no reduction happened, track speed about 4 MPH crawling up to my position. Threw the handle into emergency, STILL nothing and I was closing in on the train ahead.

Pulled the conductor valve, THAT dumped the train finally, but I was a couple of seconds too late in actually stopping since it takes 3 seconds or so for a reduction to actually get the pistons.

Crunch. :(

There was an investigation, and it was determined that a "foreign object" was found in the rotator in the brake stand. Now shithead likes to abuse me over this because I was NOT a mechanic ... they told me that a rubber O ring was found in the "float valve" (I've since found out years later that it's actually a rotary thingy) and that there's no way it could have gotten in there by itself since it was not a normal part in an ME23 brake stand. Sabotage.

So I was offered my position back once that was determined, but I had already gotten another job in radio which is what I really wanted to do with my life at the time.

As to the union ... I worked with folks in the IND division. They were mostly black guys and we got on well. Stillwell was old BMT folks, largely Italian, and they hated the black guys. So I was known down there as a "Nigger lover" and not allowed to play with the white kids as a result. I didn't give a shit.

Where I went wrong though is that after some drama over in Queens over a trainwreck there, TWU had a new faction formed called "rank and file" and my guys wanted to see them elected to replace the leadership. I handed out pamphlets for "rank and file" to the utter dismay of the Guidos. Again, I didn't give a shit.

So word I got years later is that one of the union mucky-mucks saw me doing that and "that kid needs a lesson" so I was told.

And again, I don't give a shit. But good old shithead there thinks my whole life was ruined because I went into radio, then television, then computers and had a pretty decent life without sucking the government tit for my money. :)
