Cliff notes version then ... Nelson Mandela tried to correct Apartheid through peaceful means. He got nowhere. After a massacre, he formed the ANC. He turned to many nations (including OURS) for assistance. Russians were the only ones who provided support. He was concerned about his own people and his own country and didn't give a shit about what other nations thought.

Like in the Middle east where all sides engaged in terrorism in order to achieve their own ends, Mandela turned to terrorism. That cannot be denied. But unlike many terrorists, once Apartheid unraveled, his first efforts and continuing efforts were to form a democratic government where everyone could live in peace. Unlike others, he eschewed terrorism and worked very hard to bring everyone together.

That's why some of us recoil about the myopics who only saw the means to the end and considered nothing else. Should we have strung up Menachem Begin or others who resorted to terrorism to birth a nation of democracy and freedom for their people? Accepting the "he's a terrorist" argument is a parallel situation.

That he spent the rest of his life after the collapse of Apartheid seeking peace is the reason why he's being celebrated as South Africa's "founding father" of its new democratic self instead of what Botha and DeClerk were doing down there. Those who stop sinning should be forgiven for their sins once they end. That's the way *I* was brought up.

Hope this helps, I'll now turn the microphone over to the naysayers. :)
