That's one thing that gallery cars solved; Comet Is in their original configuration too.

Besides, on railroads like that, trains ran with doors open. I remember a lot of nights getting off the PATH and onto NJT at Newark Penn; the trainmen would open up the traps before the train pulled out, and you'd be flying down the "Northeast Corridor" at close to 100 mph mere inches from doom if you were riding in the vestibule.
