I tracked American Airlines jet B772, it did a flight from Tokyo to JFK. I noticed it went via Canada and back down to get to Tokyo, I guess they don't like flying over the Pacific Ocean.

That's because the plane took the shortest distance. It doesn't appear obvious on a flat map. Try using Google Earth (the stand-alone program) and the route is obvious!
